Stella McCartney has developed the first-ever piece of clothing manufactured of plant-based, plastic-free sequins.
Radiant Matter, a material innovation firm that produces sequins made from cellulose obtained from plants, is the source of this most recent invention, which has been given the name “BioSequins.” Since sequins are made of plants instead of plastic, they are biodegradable, non-toxic, and free of metals, minerals, synthetic pigments, and colorants.
For model and campaigner Cara Delevingne, Stella McCartney used these BioSequins to make a handcrafted, all-in-one jumpsuit.
“I am amazed by the iridescent beauty of our BioSequin all-in-one – handcrafted in my London atelier from plant-derived, non-toxic sequins that are even more stunning than conventional options. Who says sustainability can’t be sexy?” said the designer in a press release.

According to Oxfam, over 33 million sequined clothing items are bought in the UK each holiday season, with 1.7 million of those ending up in landfills frequently after only five wears. As a result, it has been discovered that synthetic clothing is the source of about 35% of the microplastics in the water.
