Circular Strategy for a Green Tomorrow
Cambodia has unveiled its circular environmental strategy for 2023-2028 in a significant move towards environmental sustainability. This strategic initiative is poised to ensure environmental resilience and foster the nation’s growth of a green economy.
Environment Minister Eang Sophalleth, during the launch event, emphasized that the circular strategy aligns with the government’s Pentagonal Strategy. The primary focus of this approach revolves around three key priorities: cleanliness, green practices, and sustainability.
Guiding Principles: Clean, Green, Sustainable
Sophalleth highlighted that the strategy aims to translate the environmental sector’s potential into tangible benefits for Cambodia and its diverse population. It emphasizes explicitly promoting the sustainable utilization of renewable energy to combat global climate change. The strategy outlines a comprehensive approach, prioritizing environmental protection, natural resource conservation, and sustainable development, with a vision of achieving a carbon-neutral economy by 2050.
A pivotal aspect of the strategy is its emphasis on green investment. This includes initiatives in infrastructure construction, clean energy systems, brilliant production, green transportation, solid waste management, plastic and hazardous waste management, wastewater treatment, and air quality management. The strategy is positioned as a roadmap, delineating priority actions to ensure environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and advancing a green economy.
Sophalleth underscored that the ultimate goal is to realize the Pentagonal Strategy’s vision of transforming Cambodia into a carbon-neutral country with a remarkable 60% forest cover by 2050. This ambitious objective reflects the nation’s commitment to long-term environmental stewardship.
Cambodia plans to expand tree planting in degraded forest areas within protected zones as part of the strategy. Additionally, the country aims to distribute at least 1 million saplings annually to the public, encouraging free tree planting. These initiatives align with broader environmental goals, fostering biodiversity and enhancing green cover.
