Pune district’s inaugural Bio-Diversity Park in Talawade.
The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has embarked on an ambitious project to establish the Pune district’s inaugural Bio-Diversity Park in Talawade. This initiative marks a significant step towards conservation and sustainable development in the region. The park, spanning 70 acres along the picturesque banks of the Indrayani River, aims to address pressing environmental challenges while providing a sanctuary for diverse flora and fauna.
The development work for this pioneering project is slated to commence next month, following the approval of a ₹ three crore budget by the PCMC’s standing committee. With an estimated total cost of ₹95 crores, the endeavor signifies a substantial investment in environmental stewardship. Budget allocation for subsequent phases of development will be carried out systematically to ensure the park’s holistic transformation.
Manoj Sethia, the joint city engineer at PCMC, envisions the Bio Diversity Park as a haven for indigenous and exotic species, offering visitors an immersive experience amidst nature’s splendor. The park will feature themed sections, including diverse amenities such as an open amphitheater, an interpretation center, a cafeteria, a children’s playground, parking facilities, and restrooms. Emphasizing the restoration efforts, Sethia highlights the importance of rewilding and reintroducing native flora to foster a self-sustaining ecosystem.
Fostering Environmental Consciousness
Commissioner Shekhar Singh underscores the educational aspect of the project, emphasizing its role in raising awareness about biodiversity conservation. The park aims to instill a sense of responsibility for environmental preservation across all age groups through interactive exhibits, guided tours, and educational programs. Singh envisions the park as a catalyst for nurturing a profound connection with nature and fostering a collective commitment to safeguarding our natural heritage.
Recognizing the imperative of collective action, Singh stresses the active involvement of the local community in sustaining the park’s ecological integrity. Workshops, tree plantation campaigns, and clean-up drives will serve as platforms for fostering a sense of ownership and environmental stewardship among citizens. Schools, colleges, and local organizations are poised to play a pivotal role in leveraging the park as a hub for environmental education, thereby nurturing a generation of conscientious custodians of the environment.
